Personalized gifts for kids

Posted on | November 23, 2009 | 1 Comment

It’s in their nature. Kids, especially the younger ones, think that the universe revolves around them.  As they grow up, they gradually learn the truth. Well, most of them/us do. Let’s face it, being in the center rocks, and that’s why we all love personalized gifts, made just for us. Oh wait, I mean, the kids do!

That’s why a personalized gift is always a great option. The problem with most personalized gift shops seems to be with the limited choice, and one that is rarely kids-oriented. Well, here’s the solution: Happy Kids. This online shop is all about personalized gifts for the lil ones and has lots of great items for you. They carry the standard personalized mugs, teeshirts etc, but also some unique items you just can’t find anywhere else. Here are just a few of them:

A beautiful wooden stool with the child’s name painted on it in a happy design. Practical and beautiful!

Absolutely gorgeous quilted backpacks for kids! Just look at these designs – the train on blue and the butterfly on pink – and how cute the monogrammed names are on these soft backpacks. There’s a sweet lunch bag version too -

If you’re looking for something for slightly older children, Happy Kids carry a selection of awesome super heroes books. Not only will they integrate the kid’s name on the book cover, but also in the story itself. They can even weave in names of his friends and more. I just know boys would LOVE these -

Custom-printed books featuring the name of your choice as the main character. It’s not just the name too – you can add up to two other names of friends, as well as the location, creating a unique personalized book. These are hardcover washable books, made to last and make children happy for generations to come.

Happy Kids offer you a HUGE selection of books featuring every kid’s favorite super heroes. Superman, Spiderman, Batman… you name it, they have it – and of course princess books for the girls too:
Ballerina Princess

I just can’t believe what a huge selection Happy Kids have! With over 150 different products to choose from, their online shop is a must-visit – you will definitely find something special, unique and personalized for any kid there!

Our family’s favorite gaming website (we’re members for the third year in a row!) has such a nice special this week, I just had to dedicate a blog post to it. They let you play their online games and earn tokens for your scores. The tokens are then transformed into donations that go to the Ronald McDonald House© Charities for McHappy Day©!

Play to Donate with Shockwave until November 20th!

Yup, you have the perfect excuse to play now – kids or parents – after all, it IS for a good cause!

Click HERE and start playing for FREE and donating money to charity

You have dozens of games to choose from… from puzzles to action games, mysteries, time management challenges and word games – there is plenty of choice in every category, with the net’s leading games all available under one trusted virtual roof.

We absolutely love the Shockwave site and my kids play their games everyday (ok, ok, I play too, occasionally – some of these games are irresistible). When you play to donate, note that you can either buy each game for future play, or you can do what we did and get your own subscription. Highly recommended as a gift for kids… or for grownups! Here’s a link to their gift certificates page in case you’re interested.

Three most Popular Gifts for Kids in 2009

Posted on | November 5, 2009 | Leave a Comment

It’s November and high-season for gifts for kids shopping, so a great time to for an overview of the kids toys and games market. Checking Amazon’s sales stats and injecting my own thoughts and insights, let’s see what are the absolute hits this year. We’re not talking “has-beens” either. On the contrary, these are bound to be the greatest hits on this holiday season, so get ready to click and shop – kids will be thrilled receiving any of these!

Zhu Zhu Pets

zhuzhuhamster

The Zhu Zhu hamsters are definitely a hit and still going strong. Very strong, heading the charts on Amazon’s best selling toys. The various furry hamsters, along with the accompanying play sets for them appeal to kids and parents alike.

After all, it’s an interactive cute little pet that you don’t really have to worry about. No cage cleaning and no odor issues – the perfect hamster is here! And just like with cats, one Zhu Zhu hamster just leads to another, so with a selection of five different ones, kids are always to add another critter to their collection.

Bakugan Sets
Bakugan Toys are all the rage among young boys. I have blogged about Bakugan Battle Toys before – and they are still as popular now as in the beginning of the year. My hat is off to the makers of Bakugan. Their marketing plan, not to say ploy, is pure genius. They created a TV animated series where the entire plot surrounds a game of transformable balls and cards. The Bakugan toys are not the sidekick of the show – they are what the show is all about. Kids love the show and get drawn into the game in a way I’ve never seen before. Check out the Bakugan post for more information and visit the Amazon page to see the best selling sets and toys.

The Mindflex Game

Another hit this year is the Mindflex set by Mattel – featured on my previous posts about mind training games. The concept is unique and original and I can see how grown-ups will be as attracted to this “game” as kids (if not more so). I am curious to see how these games will fair in 2010. Will they remain popular for years to come, or will they turn out to be a short fad in the market? Time will tell.

And one more…

This post is about the most popular gifts for kids in 2009, but looking at these three rather “mechanical” and “technical” options, I have to say I am pleased to see that the fourth most popular is a good old word game called Bananagrams. The packaging may be novel – a yellow banana shaped soft container, but inside you find… letter tiles! Who would have guessed this humble game will make the top sellers lists?

Train the Mind – the Jedi Trainer and Mindflex

Posted on | October 24, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Have you seen the latest in toy gadgets? Your own private EEG toy that lets you practice your “telekinesis” abilities, moving objects using nothing but brain power.

This is actually not a bad way to teach kids and grownups how to focus and reach a higher level of mental concentration. Much like bio-feedback toys, these sets pick up on your body signals and once the right frequency is achieved, the move the object for you. Obviously not real telekinesis, but a cool enough replica.

As a gift for kids, I would recommend the highly popular Jedi Trainer by Uncle Milton -

jeditrainer

The game set is simple, with an easy to grasp target: move the ball up in the air using your “brain power”. The Star Wars appeal is immense, with the design and package putting kids into the right mindset. Have any kid wear a robe (a dark bathrobe is fine) and don on his light saber and expect hours of quiet concentration as the young jedi progresses through the 15 different levels of training, complete with audio feedback by no other than Master Yoda himself. Click to get the Jedi Trainer on Amazon.

The Mindflex uses the very same principles, with a similar headset to measure your brain activity with. The focus is not on any particular plot or theme, but rather on an array of objects and movements to be performed. More appropriate for slightly older kids, and certainly for adults, this sophisticated set by Mattel is bound to make EVERYONE want to test their own brain powers. Family Board Games – Settlers of Catan

Posted on | October 19, 2009 | Leave a Comment

I was pleasantly surprised to see Settlers of Catan hit the bestsellers list on Amazon, as it is definitely a family favorite in our home. This is a classic, though fairly modern, strategy game where you collect resources, trade them and used them towards building your little empire of roads and settlements on the board. The Settlers of Catan is complex and intricate game but also very easy to play. My 7 year old son and his friends are all experts by now and love playing.

catan

The social element, where you “trade” with other players by negotiating is a lot of fun and provides the family with a fun setting where parents and kids negotiate on a fair basis. The kids love it – being able to refuse Daddy’s deals? you just can’t beat that!

The game set is of very high quality. Our kids enjoy it from the very beginning, from the stage where you set up your world, putting together the beautiful thick hexes into a new and exciting world view (which changes with each game). The cards, the board pieces, the roads and houses are all of superb quality. They’re not only nice to handle, but also built to last for years to come. This is one of those games that will stay in the family for generations – so roll the dice and enjoy!

Zhu Zhu Hamster Time!

Posted on | October 11, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Looking for a cool and super cute gift? Here’s the latest craze, and honestly, it’s beyond cute -

As seen on TV… these cuddly little plush toys are all the rage with their cute purrs and lovable antics. Let’s face it, hamsters are called Teddy Bear Hamsters for a reason – they’re just so cute, and these, unlike the real live ones are quite huggable (and never bite!).  You have various types of Zhu Zhu hamsters, each with its own name and coloring. They’re smart too – with unique “behavior” patterns for each type.

When they’re released into their habitats, they interact with their surroundings and display their various behaviors and each comes in two modes: loving and exploring. Although they have a clear mechanical quality (well, they ARE mechanical) this really is as close as you can get to a live pet – without the added responsibilities.

Here’s this super cute video I found, showing just how adorable the Zhu Zhu hamsters can be:

There is a country-wide shortage of Zhu Zhu hamsters which made prices shoot up. You could wait for them to drop again, or, if you can afford to, make your kid happy now with the various hamsters and accessories. I just checked on Walmart’s online store, and yup, all out of stock…
