Rosh Hashana Gifts for Kids

Posted on | August 31, 2009 | Comments Off

In about two weeks time, Jewish families will be celebrating the New Jewish Year, soon to be followed by Yom Kippur and Sukkot.  Whether you’re invited to a New Year’s Eve celebration at a Jewish home, or just want to bestow a gift from afar, here are some ideas for nice gifts for kids, with a distinct Jewish flavor.  All of them can be ordered online right now, on Amazon, and delivered to your dear ones on time!

Books and Music

There are several children’s book dealing with Rosh Hashana and its meaning in Judaism. Sammy Spider’s First Rosh Hashanah, for example, is a popular choice covering the basics of this Jewish holiday from the perspective of a cute spider residing on the ceiling. Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride is another popular option for pre-schoolers, with a story that brings forward traditional elements of Rosh Hashanah, as well as concepts of “teshuvah” (repenting) as Yom Kippur approaches.

A good addition to any book would be this CD of Jewish Holiday Songs for Children:

While only a couple of the tracks are actual Rosh Hashanah songs, it’s a melodic collection of festive tunes dedicated to the Jewish holidays through out the year – a fitting gift for the start of the new Jewish year!

Fun and Educational

Cure and kid-oriented, these gifts are still educational and definitely convey the spirit of the Jewish holidays. The KidKraft Rosh Hashanah Set is a helps to encourage make-belief games and roleplay with some Yiddishkeit poured in:

The set includes everything they need for a simulated Rosh Hashanah dinner, from the sweet round raisin chala bread and covers, through honey & apple, candles and of course, a shofar!

Another option is Wooden Puzzle of Rosh Hashanah by Melissa and Doug -

roshhashanah2

A high-quality puzzle depicting children celebrating the New Year with traditional Jewish dishes along with the biblical relevant text from Leviticus. This is a great puzzle that will last in any family for generations to come, to be pulled out of the cupboard as the Jewish holidays approach.

Fluffy Rosh Hashanah Wishes

Amazon offers you a selection of fluffly rosh hashanah plush animals. Choose from a variety of very cute teddy bears, bunnies, cute frogs and elephants even. They all wear a white festive teeshirt declaring it’s Rosh Hashanah. And no, I couldn’t see any porky piggies among them ;)

And finally… a real Shofar!

A real shofar, an instrument made of an animal horn, is a delight for the senses. It’s a beautiful item to behold, smooth to the touch and most importantly, it makes a lot of noise! No wonder kids love it! A real shofar is bound to make kids of all ages happy, and it’s beautiful enough to stay in their room through out the year as a decorative element. We’ll end this post with some popular Shofar horn choices, just click on the picture to get to the product page on Amazon:
